No matter what time of year you decide to travel (for example to escape the Australian winter), Sri Lanka is an excellent beach destination. The dry and rainy seasons interchange between the south coast and the east coast, determining which destination to head to by time of year. The western and southern beaches are at their best from November to April, while the quieter eastern coast becomes popular from April to November. We love the unspoilt beaches of Hiriketiya, Mawella and Talpe on the south coast and the tranquil white sandy beaches of Kuchchaveli, Uppaveli and Kalkudah on the east coast, where time seems to stand still. The beach in Kalpitiya in the northwest offers active beach holidays with barefoot luxury. For those looking for something more vibrant there is plenty on offer down the southern coast from Mirissa to Tangalle.

A beach holiday is not the same for everyone. In addition, many popular beach destinations are located in close proximity to heritage sites, tea plantations and wildlife sanctuaries. Accommodation and cuisine are a large part of a beach holiday.
