Tea Plantation Tours

Endless stretches of terraced, neatly pruned, emerald green tea gardens, dotted with colourfully dressed women handpicking tea leaves amongst misty mountains … This is the first indelible memory you are likely to have of Sri Lanka’s famous tea country. A few relaxed nights in the tea infused highlands, exploring this region’s fascinating landscapes and culture are a rewarding and indulging mid journey break.

That Sri Lanka considers tea its ‘green gold’ is no surprise! It produces some of the finest teas globally – famous for their tastes and aromas – and is the fourth largest exporter of tea in the world. Scottish tea planter, James Taylor introduced tea to Sri Lanka in the central province, Kandy in 1867. However, today the best tea is found further up the highlands where Hatton and Nuwara Eliya are renowned for producing tea of the highest quality. The higher elevation and climatic conditions – as well as the painstaking processes that continue to be practised – largely contribute to this successful production. A visit to the tea country, which is like a world of its own retaining the old-world charm of British colonial days, is a highlight of a journey to Sri Lanka.

While most of its areas are secluded with slow-paced life, Nuwara Eliya, the summer escape of the British, is a charming town that is rich in heritage buildings and lovely gardens. Often referred to by locals as ‘Little England’, a stay here gives a taste life in colonial times. Leisurely walks and trails through picturesque mountainous plantations and afternoon high teas amidst lush gardens are a given in this region – as are the very popular visits to tea plantations. These private guided tours conducted by tea experts/connoisseurs provide opportunities to obtain an inside view of tea harvesting and tea making processes and to taste tea like an expert. (Tea tasting is an art that must be mastered.

Although it is hard to pick the effortless technique of a specialist in the first instance, the sheer energy in the process makes for an interesting experience). Tea plantation tours offer luxury and indulgence. Some of the country’s finest boutique accommodation is located here. Many are British era planation bungalows that have been sensitively restored to provide lavish stays and spoil guests with services including round-the-clock butler service and delicious fresh gourmet cuisine served in private settings. We highly recommend the scenic train ride that zig zags across mountains as the most enjoyable way to reach the highlands. Our tea plantation tours include two to three night stays, ideal to embrace the very best that the region has to offer.
