Adventure/Active Tours

Explore Sri Lanka’s back roads on walking, trekking and cycling tours through picturesque rural landscapes. These activities can be tailored for families with children seeking interesting activities and slower paced expeditions and for those who want a more action packed holiday.

Sri Lanka has much to offer travellers seeking active and adventurous holidays; there are numerous places to explore away from crowds and cities with options to satisfy a range of needs, fitness levels and individual preferences. The country is small enough to allow time to experience these places in active ways with adequate breaks for rest and relaxation. Gentle walking expeditions can be taken at a slow pace through serene countryside abundant with lush green vegetation and stretches of paddy fields. This is one of the best ways to get to know the country, its people and the diverse cultures that make this island distinctive. It provides opportunities to observe the daily lives of locals with the opportunity to interact with them, perhaps over a cup of tea.

There are many trekking options for those who are seeking a more adventurous experience. The scenic hill country and highlands hold some of our favourite trails for ardent trekkers, as do the virgin forests and hilly plateaus. The terrains are interesting and diverse consisting of tea plantations, nature sanctuaries, rural villages and misty mountains. The many opportunities for panoramic views and photography on these treks are coupled with up close and personal encounters with local culture and wildlife. Cycling has always been an easy way of commuting for Sri Lankans, especially in the villages. For travellers it is an excellent way to explore the country’s rural landscapes, as well as its culture and people.

Cycling is one of the best ways of exploring the ancient ruins of the area known as the ‘Cultural Triangle’. Alternatively, the hilly terrains and coastal towns are equally interesting and well-suited to exploration by bicycle. These active/adventure experiences can be easily fitted into an overall travel plan and can be undertaken throughout the year, especially in the drier climatic regions. However, for the ardent hiker, trekking can be interesting during both the wet and dry seasons. Staying in secluded villas and boutique hotels with personalised services set amidst tranquil rural landscapes adds to the experience. In addition, if you are a foodie there is plenty of local cuisine to savour on these journeys.
