A visit to Sri Lanka’s lush green tea country is included in most visitors’ to do list. The cooler climate tea country is abundant with options for places to stay, and one of those is Ellerton Bungalow. Located about 40 minutes outside the hill station town of Kandy, Ellerton Bungalow is a tea plantation bungalow rich in old-world charm. This century old bungalow was originally built for the manager of the tea plantation and has now been lovingly crafted into a boutique hotel with just nine tastefully designed rooms.
The property has kept its colonial style and added modern touches. Visitors can stay in the main house, garden suites, or bungalows separate from the main house. There are verandahs where you can relax with a cup of tea, and sweeping views of the surrounding tea plantations and sprawling manicured gardens. Some of the suites have two rooms – which are ideal for families. You’ll discover an inviting pool with incredible views in one corner of the property and a neat little library loaded with books and videos for children and families alike. The surrounding tropical garden adds colour and attracts a number of bird species in the late afternoons and early mornings.
One of our favourite features of Ellerton Bungalow is the warm and welcoming hosts Luca and Iromi who live on the property. They are there to welcome you and ensure you get the most from your stay. You’ll also meet their playful dog Sammy! There are also delicious meals to enjoy – both Western and Sri Lankan – and we loved the gourmet coffee and freshly baked cake served with scoops of ice cream that we indulge in during our recent stay. Yum!
This property is ideal for families. There are plenty of activities to enjoy such as nature trails and walks, visiting a nearby family-run tea plantation and a trip to a small local temple. The area is great for walks and cycling too. There is also plenty of space for children to explore and play, and of course the pool that’s perfect for relaxing in the afternoon sunshine. You can easily spend a couple of days at Ellerton Bungalow, as it is central and has great connectivity to roads and railway stations including Kandy and Gampola. It is ideal to break your journey on a traditional round tour of Sri Lanka and is a great place to unwind and refresh before you depart to more activities and adventure.
