IDEAL FOR :

An uptempo introduction to Sri Lanka

1Arrive Colombo – Negombo

You will be met upon arrival at Colombo’s international airport and transferred to your hotel in Negombo, a short drive away.

2Negombo – Dambulla – Sigiriya

Drive to Sigiriya, stopping en route to visit the Dambulla Cave Temples. Said to be Sri Lanka’s biggest and best-preserved cave temples, Dambulla’s more than 150 statues of Buddha and cave paintings often leave a lasting impression on visitors. Spend some time exploring the caves and statues here. Later, continue to Sigiriya and check into your hotel.

3Sigiriya

Visit Sigiriya Rock Fortress, also known as Lion Rock. Set in green scrub jungle, this massive rock was a retreat for Buddhist monks in ancient times. Today, it is one of Sri Lanka’s must-see attractions with its network of gardens and cave frescoes. Take your time to explore this World Heritage site and climb the 1,200 steps up and down the impressive rock. Remainder of the day at leisure.

4Sigiriya – Kandy

Drive to Kandy this morning, with the option to stop at a spice garden at Matale en route and discover the flavours of Sri Lankan cooking. Kandy, the last capital of the Sri Lankan kings, is the charming, easy-going capital of the hill country centred around Kandy Lake. In the early evening, visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth.

5Kandy – Nuwara Eliya

Travel to Nuwara Eliya on a scenic four- hour rail journey, winding through the picturesque hills and countryside, taking in the natural beauty of the country from the window of your comfortable train. Known as ‘Little England’ due to its picturesque landscape and cool climate, Nuwara Eliya was founded as a hill station retreat for British civil servants. In the afternoon, discover the story of tea through a tea plantation and factory visit

6Nuwara Eliya – Yala

After breakfast, begin the drive to Yala National Park. Yala is the second-largest national park in Sri Lanka and its most visited wildlife reserve. In the afternoon, head into the park for your first jeep safari.

7Yala – Galle

Rise early for a dawn jeep safari in Yala National Park. Though it may be hard to get out of bed before the sun, this is the time of day the animals are most active, thus improving your chances of sightings. Yala is home to elephant, wild boar, wild buffalo, crocodiles, sloth bears, monkeys and the elusive leopard. After breakfast, drive to Galle.

8Galle

Discover Galle today. This UNESCO listed city was founded by the Portuguese in the 16th century and is the best example of a fortified city built by the Portuguese in south Asia. A walking tour will reveal the city’s history and its main sights including the lighthouse and rampart walls. Afternoon at leisure in Galle.

9Galle – Colombo

Depart for Colombo after breakfast, Sri Lanka’s largest city and commercial capital. Today, Colombo is a bustling city of more than two million people where different ethnic groups, religions and cultures mingle. In the afternoon, take a sightseeing tour of the city. For those wishing to see Colombo’s contemporary side, we suggest visiting Dutch Hospital for dinner and shopping in the evening.

10Depart

Today you will be transferred to the airport for your international departing flight.
