Drive to the Cultural Triangle this morning, stopping along the at Dambulla Cave Temple. Dambulla Cave Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site consists of five caves in one of the largest and best-preserved complexes of beautifully painted statues surrounded by equally beautiful wall paintings. Early this morning visit Sigiriya Rock Fortress: one of Sri Lanka’s biggest attractions. The climb consists of 1200 steps, a doable climb by stopping to catch some breath. This 5th century BC marvel is recognized as the 8th World Wonder with its still remaining structures of water gardens, frescos and stunning panoramic views from the summit. All worth the climb. This afternoon visit the ruins of the medieval kingdom of Polonnaruwa. Polonnaruwa signifies the matrimony of Sri Lankan and Indian architecture. Ponder on the great giant granite statues at Gal Viharaya and walk through the ruins of royal palaces, stupas and ancient ruins.
Drive to Kandy, the last kingdom of Sri Lanka before British rule. En route visit another ancient architectural wonder Nalanda Gedige where Dravidian architectural influence is prevalent in a Buddhist temple.
